As the narrator invites us to explore the horrors of an insane mind, a young woman wakes from a nightmare in a cheap hotel room. We follow her through the skid-row night and encounters with an abusive husband; a wino; a pimp and the rich man for whom he panders; a flashback to her traumatic childhood (she killed her father after witnessing him murder her mother); violence; pursuit through dark streets… Again the young woman wakes up. Was it only another nightmare?

The original film was 61 minutes long, with no dialogue, just music and some unsynchronized sound, such as laughing, crying, etc. The cut version of the film, known as Daughter of Horror is 56 minutes long, also with music but no dialogue, but with an added narration read by the late actor, Ed McMahon.

Dementia has been compared to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) as being a portrait of an insane mind from the “inside out”.

Though this film was credited to John Parker as being the screenwriter, director, and producer, he was only the producer of the film.  It was Bruno VeSota who was the actual screenwriter and director of this film.

Beyonce’s latest promotional photo for her album “4” has people talking! Could it be because of her signature curves or her gorgeous Victorian styled hair? Nope. Apparently it’s because of the lightening of her skin. Experts said the pale appearance of the star was most likely due to strategic lighting. The controversy should be of no surprise to the 30-year-old pop diva. Similar chatter took place after cosmetic giant L’Oreal was accused of digitally “whitewashing” the star in a 2008 advertisement. Why is it that Beyonce’ is the go-to woman as a spokesperson for products, but is constantly lightened in all of her pictures? Her obvious star power and natural beauty should be enough to catapult anyone’s products to success, right?

Beyonce’ Knowles is naturally very fair in complexion and has been rocking blonde hair since her Destiny’s Child era, so what’s with all the hoopla now? Where does the issue actually lie: With Beyonce’s willingness to dye her hair blonde and (if true) bleach her skin, or has the issue always been the “whitewashing” branding strategies of advertisement and other media outlets?

Too many industries thrive off women feeling bad about themselves and seeking ways to fix their “flaws,” which women naturally perceive as a result of not measuring up to media standards for beautiful or even “average.” Too fat, too thin, too busty, not busty enough, too tall, too white, too dark…As disgusting and tasteless as these advertising tactics seem; truthfully, they work. These tactics have been used for years and have caused products to sell and record sales to soar; however there’s a bigger issue at hand: the role ethnicity plays in our society.

“Too many black and Asian children grow up understanding the sad truth that to have dark skin is to be somehow inferior… when black celebrities appear to deny their heritage by trying to make themselves look white, I despair for the youngsters who see those images.” Yasmin Alibhai-Brown – The Daily Mail, 2011

Though thought provoking, the quote above fails to mention anything about the women of the world who lack pigmented skin. If any woman of color “dismisses their roots” by supposedly lighting their naturally pigmented skin or adding layers of long, unnatural hair they’ve betrayed their culture?  But its perfectly fine for a white woman to risk the chance of getting skin cancer from baking in the sun, “play it safe” by using department store bronzers and self tanners, submit themselves to collagen injections and butt implants, or purchase the same long, unnatural hair. Talk about a double standard.

Beyonce’ could either be heavily influenced to drastically change the dynamite looks she was blessed with, or she may be just another pawn in this awful marketing game. Nevertheless, the topic continues to draw major attention and help celebrities make headlines.

The collegiate as well as the professional football world, are mourning the loss of Joseph Vincent Paterno, the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, who led them to victory from 1966-2011. “JoePa” as he was called, holds the record for the most victories as an NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision football coach with 409 wins. He’s the only FBS coach to reach 400 victories. JoePa coached five undefeated teams that won major bowl games and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2007.

Joe Paterno was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Brown University in 1950, he followed his former coach, Charles “Rip” Engle, to Pennsylvania State University, to become his assistant coach for the Nittany Lions. After assisting Engle for 16 years, Joe succeeded him in 1966. Since acquiring the position as head coach, Paterno led Penn State to consecutive undefeated seasons in 1968 and 1969 and another undefeated seasion in 1973.

In 46 seasons, he led his team to 37 bowl appearances with 24 wins. In October 2011, Paterno set a record of his own when Penn State defeated Illinois. This victory marked his 409th career win, making him the leader in career wins for Division I coaches.

It wasn’t too long after his record making win with his team that he found himself in the midst of a scandal. Herry Sandusky, his former assistant coach, was charged with sexually abusing 8 boys during a 15-year period. Paterno had been informed in 2002 of a possible attack by Sandusky that took place at the university’s sports complex, but he admittedly did little to follow up on the allegation. When the news of the molestation allegations surfaced, Paterno came under fire for not doing enough to address this particular assault.

Paterno later explained that “I didn’t know exactly how to handle it,” referring to allegations of sexual abuse against Sandusky. “So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn’t turn out that way.”

After being fired from Penn State, Paterno began suffering health problems. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2011. While it was initially thought to be treatable, Paterno succumbed his illness two months later, on January 22, 2012, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania. He was 85.

Etta James, the fiery blues singer known best for her sweet ballad “At Last,” died Friday morning in Riverside, Calif., after a long battle with chronic leukemia. She was 73. One of the first women inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, James began her career in 1954, at the age of 15, with her group, The Creolettes. Her bold powerful voice quickly separated her from her bandmates, as did her groundbreaking choice of material, leading Atlantic Records’ producer Jerry Wexler to call her “the greatest of all modern blues singers.”

Born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in Los Angeles. As a child, Etta was a gospel prodigy, singing in her church choir and on the radio at the age of 5. When she turned 12, she moved north to San Francisco where she formed a trio and was soon working for bandleader Johnny Otis.

After signing with Chicago’s Chess Records in 1960, James’ career began to soar. Chart toppers included duets with then-boyfriend Harvey Fuqua, the heart-breaking ballad “All I Could Do Was Cry,” “At Last” and “Trust in Me.” But James’ talents weren’t reserved for powerful ballads. She knew how to rock a house, and did so with such gospel-charged tunes as “Something’s Got a Hold On Me” in 1962 and “In The Basement” in 1966. James continued to work with Chess throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Sadly, heroin addiction affected both her personal and professional life, but despite her continued drug problems she persisted in making new albums.

On December 16, 2011, it was announced that she was under 24-hour care and was terminally ill from the cancer she has been battling throughout 2011.[39] Her manager, Lupe De Leon, stated to the media that she is “in the final stages of leukemia”, has been diagnosed with both dementia and Hepatitis C, has been placed on oxygen, is receiving constant care from her husband, and is being visited regularly by her sons.

“This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world,” longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon told CNN. “She was a true original who could sing it all — her music defied category.”

Since entering the world of music royalty on Jan 7^th, 2012, 7-pound Blue Ivy Carter has collected a plethora of presents, been the center of illuminati rumors, and has begun to steadily rise up the billboard charts. Who is this newborn phenomenon that has yet to take her first steps you ask? She’s the daughter of  pop diva Beyonce’ Knowles and rap legend Shawn “Jay-Z’ Carter!

Everyone from Sean “Diddy” Combs, Kanye West, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, to Mariah Carey, Oprah Winfrey, and Gwenyth Paltrow have showered the newborn with extravagant gifts. The newborn’s superstar father even coughed up $20,000 on a Posh Tots Carriage Fantasy Crib made of solid cedar and birch. A rear luggage rack doubles as a changing table. After telling reporters she didn’t know what to get the little one, Beyoncé’s “Destiny’s Child” bandmate Kelly Roland went on a spending spree at trendy Glen Kids boutique in Bel Air, Calif, where she purchased a green Bob Marley onesie and several $300 cashmere baby blankets, a source said.

There is a rich history of top musicians being targeted by rumors about Satanism, Illuminati, and all things demonic, but the stakes are exceptionally high in the case of Blue Ivy Carter. There are theories that allege that Blue Ivy is a reworking of the name Eulb Yvi, which Twitter users and other conspiracy theorists allege is the name of Satan’s daughter, though there has been no evidence to prove such a concept. T here have also been numerology based rumors that relate the newborn as well.

“Glory,” the Jay-Z track released two days after the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter, has debuted at number 74 on Billboard’s chart of the top 100 R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in the country. Because the song is credited to “Jay-Z, featuring B.I.C” and includes baby Carter cooing just a few minutes after birth, this makes Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter the youngest person ever to chart in Billboard history!

Boxer, philanthropist, and social activist Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky.  Once he joined The Nation of Islam he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Ali won the Golden Gloves Tournament in 1959 and an Olympic gold medal in 1960. During the 1960s Ali won all of his matches with the majority of them by knockout. Since his retirement, Ali has devoted much of his time to philanthropy.

At the age of 12, Ali discovered his talent for boxing after his bike was stolen. He told a police officer that he wanted to beat up the thief and the officer told him, “Well, you better learn how to fight before you start challenging people.” That police officer was Joe Martin. Aside from his officer duties, Martin trained young boxers at a local gym.  He went on to coach and mentor Ali for the next 6 years.

Ali went on to win the 1956 Golden Gloves Championship for novices in the light heavyweight class. Three years later, he won the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions and the Amateur Athletic Union’s national title for the light-heavyweight division.

During the 1960s Ali was seemingly unstoppable. He won every one of his fights with the majority of them being by knockouts. Not only did he defeat British heavyweight champion Henry Cooper in 1963, he also knocked out Sonny Liston in 1964 to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

Ali was never afraid to toot his own horn and often referred to himself as “the greatest”. He was known for bragging about his skills before a fight and for his colorful descriptions and phrases.  The fact that he could back up his trash talk is what resonated most with society as well as his competitors. In one of his more famously quoted descriptions, Ali told reporters that he could “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” in the boxing ring.

In his retirement, Ali has devoted much of his time to philanthropy. He announced that he has Parkinson’s disease in 1984, and has been involved in raising funds for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the years, Ali has also supported the Special Olympics and the Make a Wish Foundation among other organizations.

Talk of Tebow has swept the country.  Tebow’s the 11th athlete to be named favorite athlete for at least one month in an ESPN poll that dates back to 1994.Best known for his devout Christian faith, American football star Tim Tebow has caused quite a media frenzy! The Denver Broncos quarterback who may been blessed with more piety than passing skills, took 11 seconds to pull off the longest overtime touchdown pass in the shortest overtime period in play-off history, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, and lofting his team into the second round of the American NFL play-offs.  Though heavily criticized for it, he gives credit to Jesus Christ for his random spurts of success.

He was born in the Philippines where his parents were working as Christian Baptist missionaries. His mother, suffered from a life-threatening infection during her pregnancy and doctors expected the baby to be stillborn. She claims they recommended an abortion for the sake of her health, but she refused.

As a result of this particular incident he decided to voice his opinions to a massive audience that only comes around once a year; he filmed a controversial Super Bowl commercial in 2010 for the pro-life Christian group Focus on the Family. Despite the ad mostly dealing with his mom’s experiences while pregnant with him, it sparked outrage from women’s groups before it even aired. But the devout religiousness doesn’t stop there…

Before, during, and after games, Tim would drop to one knee, place his head on his fist, and pray; this became one of Tim’s signatures. This signature resulted in what’s known today as “Tebowing.“ “Tebowing” (dropping to one knee in prayer anytime, any place) became a national phenomenon. Photos of the devout, much doubted Denver sensation, as well as photos of his fans kneeling on turf and random places in prayer are a weekly occurrence.

Although his team fell to Tom Brady and the mighty New England Patriots, resulting in the Broncos’ chance of advancing in the playoffs, Tebow has been experiencing an outstanding season this year and defied many critics who doubted his ability to make it in the NFL.

The first rap battle of 2012 is officially underway! Word of a Common vs. Drake feud began to surface after the Chi-town MC dropped his single “Sweet” back in November. On the track Common rants on and on about “soft MCs”. A month later he admitted that Drake was one of the MCs that he was referring to: “The verse is about me but when you hear some of the stuff on the chorus it’s like you can’t help but think about dude and I guess that’s what he felt. So at the end of day he fits in that category, he already embraced it, so wear it.”

Canadian MC Drake fired back lyrically with his verse on Rick Ross’ Stay Schemin’. Drake attacked an unnamed foe, a foe many believe to be Common. “Don’t be duckin’ like you never wanted nothin’/ It’s feelin’ like rap changed it was a time it was rugged/ Back when if a n—a reached it was for the weapon/ Nowadays n—as reach just to sell their record,” Drake spit.

Turning the tables fast and hard, Common remixed “Stay Schemin’” leaving his verse for last. “Can’t say my name, but rap about n****’s wife/ You show black and white tryna live a n****s’ life / I’m taking too long with this amateur guy/ You ain’t wetting nobody n****, you Canada Dry.” Can you say…shots fired?!

With Common’s recent release of his record “The Dreamer/ The Believer” one can’t help but wonder if he’s developed this beef with Drake simply because he wants to boost his album sales…

Feuds and rivalries have existed since the dawn of hip hop, which originated in the 1970s in New York City, United States. Originally, it came to block parties, where DJs would play records and isolate the percussion breaks for the dancing masses. Soon, MCs began speaking over the beats, usually simply exhorting the audience to continue dancing. Eventually, MCs began incorporating more varied and stylistic speech, and focused on introducing themselves, shouting out to friends in the audience, boasting about their own skills, and criticizing their rivals. While this was often done in good humor, the deaths of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. have meant that in today’s hip hop scene it is always feared that lyrical rivalries (known as “beefs” in hip hop slang) will develop into offstage feuds that become violent. Many observers have claimed that the media feeds on such rivalries for headlines and  MCs feed on the feuds to better sell their records.

For example, 50 Cent and Rick Ross are both housed under Universal Music Group and when their “beef” began, guess what? Albums sales shot through the roof! Ross’s two albums released prior to the feud had increased by 62% while 50’s three previous albums grew by 74%.

In August of 2011,The beef between Jay Z and Lil’ Wayne had created quite a buzz and had a significant impact on their summer projects “Watch The Throne” (a Jay-Z and Kanye West collabo) and “The Carter IV” (Lil’ Wayne). The feud helped “Watch the Throne” reach 613,000 in sales by late August. Funny thing is, “The Carter IV” reached 964,000 units within days of its August 29 release.

In an interview 50 Cent explained how artists misinterpret attention.”They think it’s a positive thing to go after someone who has a bigger profile when they actually getting ready to release a record. But it doesn’t help unless your record is commanding that attention at the same time.”

So is this a scam set up to help Common move more album units?

The Amen break is a brief drum solo performed in 1969 by Gregory Cylvester “G. C.” Coleman in the song “Amen, Brother” performed by the 1960s funk and soul outfit The Winstons. The full song is an up-tempo instrumental rendition of Jester Hairston’s “Amen,” which he wrote for the 1963 Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field. Neither the performer, drummer G.C. Coleman, nor the copyright owner Richard L. Spencer have ever received any royalties or clearance fees for the use of the sample, nor have they sought royalties.

The song itself achieved fame within the hip hop and subsequent electronic music communities when a former Downstairs Records employee known as Breakbeat Lenny compiled it onto his 1986 Ultimate Breaks and Beats bootleg series for DJs. Lenny hired Louis Flores to edit four bars of the drum break at a much slower speed than the remainder of the song. Although it created a jarring difference in tempo in the center of the song, it allowed Hip-Hop DJs to extend the beat by switching between two copies of the record on two separate turntables at a danceable tempo while ignoring the rest of the song. This technique was created by Kool Herc in 1974 and became a trend at large in 1977 with the efforts of Grandmaster Flash.

By 1990, at the height of British rave culture, the Amen break began to appear in an increasing number of breakbeat hardcore productions. Hardcore emphasized a unique, harsh, aggressive sound that drew strongly from hip-hop and early acid house. It added a hip-hop influence with the addition of breakbeats and increased the tempo.

On 6 March 2011, BBC Radio 1 broadcast an hour-long documentary as part of the Radio 1 Stories series about the Amen break, presented by Kutski. The influence of the Amen Break was also featured in The Economist calling it a “short burst of drumming that changed the face of music”

It’s been blazing quite a bit in the city of Hollywood, California! Literally. Hollywood area resident and native of Germany, Harry Burkhart has been connected to more than 50 fires over four days, that spread fear and panic across Los Angeles and caused an estimated $US3 million in damage! Prosecutors investigating an October 2011 house fire in the central German city of Marburg confirmed yesterday that they would also like to speak to the 24-year-old.US officials, searching for a motive for the LA fires, are investigating links to an immigration dispute involving his mother, Dorothee Burkhart, who was detained last week at the request of the German government on various fraud charges, including negi on payments for her breast augmentation.

Dorothee Burkhart, who is in her 50s, was charged with 19 counts of fraud in Frankfurt, including failing to pay for a 2004 breast-augmentation surgery and pilfering security deposits from renters.The mother, who has been in federal custody since her arrest last week, cried out multiple times during a new court appearance on Tuesday, demanding to know the whereabouts of her son, who she described as mentally ill.

“He was strange…withdrawn, not very outspoken, kind of shy,” said neighbor Peter McKenzie.

Hundreds of investigators, police officers and firefighters raced to deal with the blazes. Police conducted extra patrols all weekend, and the noise of helicopters and sirens persisted virtually nonstop in Hollywood. Harry Burkhart was detained by a reserve deputy near Sunset Boulevard around 3:00am local time on Monday. The officer stopped the suspect’s van because it matched one seen by witnesses to the fires.

Nearly all of the fires in the four day arson spree were started in cars or under vehicle engines and in most cases spread to car ports, garages and homes. No one was injured. The two lived together in a one-bedroom apartment in Hollywood. Neighbors said the mother and son kept to themselves.

But wait…the story gets even hotter!

Ms Burkhart appears to own an erotic massage business, and has been linked to websites offering the services of ‘Goddess Annabelle’ in the Hollywood area. The sites describe their owner as a ‘sexologist’, but emphasise that her massages are not to be confused with prostitution.

Dorothee Burkhart appeared in court on Tuesday.
