Etta James, the fiery blues singer known best for her sweet ballad “At Last,” died Friday morning in Riverside, Calif., after a long battle with chronic leukemia. She was 73. One of the first women inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, James began her career in 1954, at the age of 15, with her group, The Creolettes. Independent, free, and rebellious in his own way, Jack Kerouac, born Jean-Louis Kerouac, was an American novelist and poet. He is considered a literary icon and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation. Kerouac is recognized for his spontaneous method of writing, covering topics such as Catholic spirituality, jazz, promiscuity, Buddhism, drugs, poverty, and travel. The profile of the boosters is usually white affluent business men who love their local institutions and sports programs (not so much the academics). They long to be top flight sports stars themselves and envy the young brash athletically gifted African-American kid from the inner city. These kids come from challenging backgrounds of one parent homes and poor education. They want the boosters money and the boosters want their soul. It’s a match made in hell. Here is the rub.
