Sita Sings the Blues is an interpretation of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. It tells the story of the warrior prince Rama and his relationship with his wife Sita, who he rejects, breaking her heart. The film’s American animator Nina Paley could identify because she was dumped by her husband. “The film is semi auto-biographical,” she admits. “I folded in my own story of my marriage breaking apart. And what I do is occasionally cut from these fantasy scenes of fantasy ancient India to my own modern story.” The contemporary tale of Nina’s disintegrating marriage is just one of three stories in the film. In addition there’s the telling of the epic itself, as well as commentary from a group of three shadow puppets. But the most unusual aspect of the film is interspersing the storytelling with the Hindu goddess Sita singing the blues. The vocals come from the 1920′s American Jazz artist Annette Hanshaw. Paley included those songs because the lyrics and the sadness expressed resonated with her own pain. “I was going through a heartbreak. This combination of the songs, which were torch songs, was very sad. Also Annette Hanshaw’s voice, which was just so pure and vulnerable and clear.” Continue reading ‘Animation Imitating Life:’
Lindsay might go back to jail. Mike Vick is out of jail and is now the talk of the new NFL season. Is the new Fall season really that big of a deal?? The presidents approval rating is sliding and is the LaBron James debate a racial issue?Did you know there is still a war going on?? With the withdraw from Iraq over the focus is now Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the the place where the Russian were sent packing and it is the so-called home of Bin Laden. The Taliban has a foothold that they are not willing to relinquish. They rule with an iron hand and will be there until the last man has fallen. What has the US learned from the experience in Iraq? Arguably nothing. Then again the same could be said for Vietnam as well. Continue reading ‘Insanity:’
Johnny Carson is best known as America’s late night king of comedy. As thirty year host of NBC television’s Tonight Show, his topical monologues, irreverent characters, comical double takes and frivolous sketches entertained more people than any other performer in history. His late night arena provided plugs for untold books, films and products, created a springboard to stardom for an infinite number of new performers and, more than occasionally, offered a secure refuge for aging legends.Carson began performing professionally at the age of fourteen as a magician-comic, “The Great Carsoni,” for the local Rotary Club in his hometown of Norfolk, Nebraska. After a two year stint as a Navy Ensign during World War II, and four years as a radio-drama major at the University of Nebraska, he plunged headfirst into the world of broadcasting as a radio announcer-disc jockey. When WOW in Omaha began television operations in 1949, Carson was there to host his first video program, The Squirrel’s Nest, a daily early afternoon show. Continue reading ‘Johnny Carson:’
I’ve Got A Secret was an early celebrity game show in which the celebrity panel had to figure out the guest’s secret by asking questions from which clues were derived. The program was aired by CBS from 1952 to 1967.This show features Mr. Samuel J. Seymour who was ninety-six years old at the time the show aired. Mr. Seymour was the last living person to have been present at the Lincoln assassination. He was five years old when he witnessed John Wilkes Booth leap from the balcony of Ford’s Theatre, on April 14th, 1865, after shooting President Lincoln. Mr. Seymour died two months after the show’s airing, on April 14th, 1956, ninety-one years to the day of Lincoln’s assassination.Jayne Meadows, with some preparation by radio and television personality Bill Cullen, seems to be particularly bright and adept at the game. The sexual tension between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is hilarious and the great Gary Moore (who later went on to host the 70′s program, To Tell The Truth) plays a wonderful foil. The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds.
The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated “news bulletins”, which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a ‘sustaining show’ (it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the program’s quality of realism. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated. In the days following the adaptation, however, there was widespread outrage. The program’s news-bulletin format was decried as cruelly deceptive by some newspapers and public figures, leading to an outcry against the perpetrators of the broadcast, but the episode secured Orson Welles’ fame. Some listeners heard only a portion of the broadcast, and in the atmosphere of tension and anxiety just prior to World War II, took it to be a news broadcast.
