This was it. The greatest concert that never happened. “This Is It,” was Michael Jackson’s farewell tour. It was supposed to be the show that brought Michael back from the dead. Instead it became a film that celebrated his musical genius after passed. The director of the film, Kenny Ortega had met Jackson in the late 1980′s and began to work with him in the early 90′s. Ortega’s perspective is compelling. He had worked closely with Michael over the past 20 years. He knew Jackson through the public dark ages of the MJ legacy. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, was laid to rest in Forest Lawn cemetery one year ago following a public memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. MJ’s record sales continue to spike into the stratosphere as his fans remember the life, the joy, the music! Death can be a very good career move, at least if you are Michael Jackson. Since his physical demise one year ago the Jackson estate has signed a 250 million dollar deal with Sony and made over a billion dollars in posthumous sales. His brand in death (unlike in life) is permanent. It’s a comeback that has restored Jackson to the powerful peak he enjoyed in the ’80s, when albums like Off The Wall and Thriller revived the flagging music industry and made consumers far less resistant to making the transition to the compact disc.
