Obama to Announce Daschle for Cabinet Post

tom_daschle.jpgOn Thursday President-elect Barack Obama will announce former Senator Thomas A. Daschle of South Dakota as his pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

Daschle, the former South Dakota senator who was exiled in 2004 in an aggressive Republican push for his seat, has had a close working association with Obama for at least four years.  He was a mentor to Obama when the Illinois senator joined the Senate in 2005 and was a key adviser during Barack Obama’s campaign.

Daschle is also a departure from Obama’s thus-far Clinton-heavy line-up.  He was friendly with Bill Clinton but never worked for him, and they were not known as close allies.

As secretary of the department of health and human services, Daschle will likely head up administration efforts to develop health insurance coverage, an area Obama has signaled will be a top priority after his inauguration in January.  Thomas Daschle will direct the expansion of health policy, and, given his extensive contacts in the Senate, will likely help drive legislation through Congress.
