Proposition 8: The Musical

prop8musical.jpgMusicals have never been famous for being a very subversive genre, at least not in Hollywood. But the truth is, despite the fact that people break into song in the middle of the street, musicals can provide an avenue to look closely at serious issues in a very current and thought-provoking way. Take Cabaret or Rent as such examples. And in light of the current protests of California’s newly passed Proposition 8, the folks over at Funny or Die decided the best way to protest this controversial legislation was through…..song? And Jack Black playing the role of Jesus Christ.

Ever since the proposition was added to the California state constitution banning same-sex marriage from being legally recognized, LGBTQ activists across the country have joined together to speak out against this amendment. They argue that Prop8 denies their civil rights and is an egregious violation of separation of church and state; on the flipside, the religious right that has largely supported this amendment claims allowing same-sex marriage would damage society, require changes to a school curriculum to discuss same-sex marriage, and threaten the religious values.

Does Prop8=H8?
