Just as the Olympic games were beginning and the world had their focus on gold medals, Georgia (ex-Soviet, neighboring country to Russia), lead a devastating attack on South Ossentia (country loyal to Russia). An estimated 1,600 Ossentians were supposedly killed in this attack, provoking Russia to step in. Entering South Ossentia immediately, the prepared Russian troops began launching air strikes and sending in tanks. There have been reportedly close to 2,000 people killed in this response, which have caught the attention the U.S. as well as other countries. President Bush called for Russia to withdraw its troops and sign a ceasefire treaty, in which Russia has complied. But now, Georgia’s President claims Russian troops still remain in certain parts of major cities and smaller provinces. What will become of these countries and of the powerful Russia?
